ramen rating: shimadaya shoyu

shimadaya ramen
One neat thing about Shimadaya’s ramen is that there are three flavor packets! There’s a packet of soup base, a packet of seasoning oil, and a pack of spices. Those of you who enjoy reading ingredients will find that there’s both chicken extract and chicken extract powder, two kinds of fat (the seasoning oil is basically a mixture of chicken fat and pork fat), and two helpings of MSG (in the soup base as well as in the “spices”). Yum!

At this point, if you’ve decided never to try this ramen, you’ll be missing out. Of the packaged ramen that I’ve tried, shimadaya’s soup is especially fragrant, probably from the dash of garlic and onion in the soup base. The soup is a bit lighter in the shoyu flavor than my current favorite maruchan, but also a bit more complex and less like shoyu mixed with water. The noodles are firm and chewy, slightly starchy, and quite good.

The mix of garlic and MSG always gives my tongue that rough, coated feeling for a while, but if you can handle that, you’ll enjoy this ramen. Shimadaya has a winner and it gets an 8 out of 10.

I lived off this stuff through college and sometimes would eat 2 or 3 a day, usually to keep my roommate from stealing them. That’s how good it is. Lately it’s been hard to find so I’ve stuck with the Myojo Chukazanmai (nama version).
