@Andy: Thanks. I actually wondered that originally too. For the readers that can’t read Japanese, that would be “Go Men” as in “Go Noodles”

@Keizo: Thanks for the clarification. I will definitely try the tonkotsu shoyu next time!

Here's a little more history on Gomen. The chef/owner is from Wakayama and he paid to learn from the chef of the famed Ide Shoten, hence the relation to the TV Champion (he himself is not the champion). In the beginning, it was hard for customers to get used to the heavy tonkotsu-shoyu that Ide was known for so in order to stay in business he decided to tweak the soup to satisfy the American palate. I guess it worked, but a part of me still wishes that he'll convert back someday.

Great review, edjusted! I was just down there, and I wish I had read your review earlier. What a great story behind the name. I wonder if it’s also a slight pun — as in ご麺, which is not a real word, but could be taken as an honorific of noodles.

Of course it was me!…hehe. Very sad story but maybe that’s the reason why the tonkotsu-shio is so good. Definitely the best in OC!! Awesome review!

Hahaha! You’re wife is hilarious! Btw, you might want to stay away from the chanpon. I had it the last time and was utterly disappointed by its blandness. He has two types of noodles–one homemade and the other from Myojo–but I forget which one goes into which soup. Mabo is good too but Tonkotsu-shio is the best.

Did someone say “meet up” at Gomen? I’m down!

Great review! I’ve heard much baout this restaurant and can’t wait to try it out (I’ll see if I can find Keizo and maybe we can all meet up.

I’m hoping this is better than Kohryu and too many other sad Ramen-yas I’ve tried recently.
