the ramen blog & other goodies!
Most Americans know ramen only in the 5000-pack for a buck instant variety and as “starving college student food.” But ramen is so much more. Read more...

ramen rating: santouka, take 2 – costa mesa, ca

More than one person has taken me to task for not trying the tokusen toroniku (choice fatty pork) ramen at Santouka. Interestingly, not one of my friends think Santouka is very good. But then again, none of them have tried the toroniku either. So finally, I convinced two other ramen-loving (well, ramen-enjoying anyway) friends to...

ramen rating: togoshi ramen – las vegas, nv (closed)

Off the Vegas Strip, away from the 99-cent shrimp cocktails, the iron chef restaurants, the all-you-can-eat buffets, things become a bit quieter and less boisterous. Drive a few miles away, and you’ll come across a quiet strip mall that could just as well be located in Anytown, USA. This is the kind of deserted strip...

ramen rating: kohryu ramen, take 2 – costa mesa, ca

Kohryu Restaurant has gone through not only a change in ownership but a complete remodel since my last review. After their grand re-opening in January, I thought I’d give them another try. We arrived in time for a late lunch, hoping there’d be less people…wait, why are all these people huddled outside (it was really...

ramen rating: king car shoyu

Agh!! Get it off of me! Getitoffofme! — oh, sorry… Ahem…this is the kind of instant noodles that gives people nightmares. In the interest of saying something useful besides just warning people from this travesty, I find it interesting that, even though technically ramen “started” from China, then evolved into the Japanese version we’re all...

ramen rating

you’re really supposed to add your own ingredients to this type of box ramen, like veggies and onions and maybe some meat…without additional goodies, it’s very very average…both the noodles and the soup is just boooring…it gets a 5

ramen rating: kurume ichiban tonkotsu shoyu

This is the last day of Ogawaya ramen week (actually, this review is 2 days late. Sorry…had a busy weekend), and I’m a bit sad. But, I’m also a bit glad…you try to come up with 5 different and interesting ways to describe the same noodles! I also want to give a shoutout to rameniac...

ramen rating: kurume ramen, futatsu no aji

I have a bad habit of not really looking at or reading the packages of ramen that I eat until after I’ve eaten them. In this case, I was a bit surprised to open the package and see two different colored soup packets…was this some special “red/white song battle” (K?haku Uta Gassen) ramen? No, there’re...

ramen rating: shimadaya shoyu

One neat thing about Shimadaya’s ramen is that there are three flavor packets! There’s a packet of soup base, a packet of seasoning oil, and a pack of spices. Those of you who enjoy reading ingredients will find that there’s both chicken extract and chicken extract powder, two kinds of fat (the seasoning oil is...

ramen rating: nissin shoyu

Deja vu…nissin’s shoyu ramen reminded me so much of maruchan’s shoyu ramen that i had to doublecheck the package. Nissin’s noodles are just as good, with a nice firm texture, and the soup is just as good. Just like the maruchan ramen, this is quite good, but not spectacular. It earns an 8.

ramen rating: ebisu mendokoro – fountain valley, ca

I’ve been going to Ebisu ramen for around 20 years now, so when my wife recently asked me why I haven’t reviewed them yet, all I could do was give her my best deer-caught-in-headlights look. Ebisu Mendokoro is owned by the same company that owns the Ebisu supermarket and the Bon Marche bakery in the...

ramen rating: yamachan shoyu

In a nutshell, this is a very average ramen. The noodles are nicely chewy, though they have a tendency to really clump together and become a too-hard-to-chew mess. The soup is just so-so. I can only give this a 5.5 (half point off for the clumpiness factor).

ramen rating: hidatakayama

Very average ramen with skinny so-so noodles and decent shoyu soup. You get a piece of mystery meat and some green onions and that’s it. This gets a 6.

ramen rating: sapporo shoyu tonkotsu

So is it shoyu or tonkotsu? Unfortunately, it doesn’t really matter. So-so noodles and so-so soup makes this a very average nondescript ramen. It gets a 6.

ramen rating: maruchan shoyu

Wow…everyone’s favorite college-student-cheap ramen has a semi-fresh ramen! It’s made in the U.S. and I found it at our local 99 Ranch (Chinese supermarket) so it should be relatively easy to find. And guess what…it’s actually pretty darn good! The noodles are a little bit skinny but chewy and tasty. The soup is a decent...

ramen rating: myojo shoyu

Ah…now we’re talking…this ramen is made by the same company as the last one I rated, which I really enjoyed. This one is shoyu flavored, and it’s very good. This is the best of the semi-fresh ramens I’ve had so far and I’m giving it a 8.5. Why not a 9? Because I haven’t had...
